This vice documentary is on a man who has been completely isolated for 40 years. The presenters role in this documentary was extremely important as she was the person who was speaking to the guy who had been in complete isolation for 40 years. A young lady who gave facts and opinions on this mans life and how he spends it. She was able to communicate and converse with him as she understood his language which made it easier for him to communicate with her. As viewers we understood what we heard as there was subtitles at the bottom which made it easier for us to understand what the man was talking about. The presenter was involved in this documentary except for one part which was at the beginning. From the beginning to 1.56 seconds it was to do with the guy and him speaking a bit about himself and his situation.
The presenter was formal as this documentary was something serious however the mode of address matched the mood of the documentary allowing it to be engaging alongside allowing the viewers to understand the facts. At 1.57 seconds when we first hear the presenter talking she mentions facts and this was done through voice-overs. This allows the viewers to keep focused and engaged with the documentary as they are still visually able to see shots while hearing facts and opinions through voice-overs. The presenter directly looked in to the camera at 5.18 seconds as she was showing the picture to the viewers. the presenter engages with the viewers by making sure they are entertained, this is done through a number of ways such as voice-overs etc.
There are different types of camera angles which keeps the viewers engaged and entertained. For example at the beginning of the documentary at 0.22 seconds the documentary opens with a pan shot of a place called 'Patagonia, Chile'. This shot allows the viewers to be aware of the location and also allows the viewers to see the scenery of Patagonia, Chile. The techniques such as editing is done at a slow pace to create tension. For example from 0.31 seconds to 0.40 seconds the shot remains the same which is a still shot of the place where the isolated man lives.
At 0.40 seconds the background sound we hear is not very clear. This creates an atmosphere where the viewers may try to find out what the background sound is however, at at 0.55 seconds subtitles saying 'they've been playing for 33 minutes' comes up. This allows the viewers to think about who these people are. The documentary also includes sounds in other areas for example at 3.00 seconds the background sound is calm and matches the pace of the filming. This documentary has an intro and outro. The intro has been made so that viewers are aware of where the documentary had been filmed and how the isolated man is living his life, For example we first see a shot of the country he is situated at which is Patagonia, Chile. Thereafter at 0.31 seconds we see the place where the man is living at. This allows the viewers to understand the living conditions of the man and how he must be finding it difficult to live in that area and environment. The outro ends with the presenter shaking hands with the isolated man and ends with the scenery of sheeps followed by the sky at 9.20 seconds.
In this documentary the main people getting filmed is the isolated man and the presenter at times. However the main person of this documentary who is being presented and on screen is the isolated man as he is the person the viewers are intrested about. Shots of the scenery or where the presenter is travelling to is done by having voice-overs to keep the viewers entertained for example at 2.38 seconds the presenter is mentioning facts about the isolated man. This documentary is both objective and subjective, However when the presenter talks it is mostly objective as she is telling the viewers how this isolated man in living in such an area on his own. For example at 7.38 seconds the voice-over is over the presenter mentioning facts and dates of what happened before. When the isolated man talks it is mostly subjective as he is talking about his lifestyle and how he is living on his own etc. For example at 1.42 seconds where he talks about how he is living. Throughout the documentary we find out different facts about Patagonia, Chile and how the man has been living on his own. We also find out different opinions of what the presenter feels at sometimes while giving us facts.
Overall I feel this documentary is targeted towards the people who have interest in finding out about different living situations, or how people can live alone etc. This documentary will keep the viewers entertained as it has a mixture of facts and opinion. The way it has been filmed and edited will also engage the audience to the documentary.
Slave of Dubai
This vice documentary is on people who are paid less for the work they do. Dubai is a rich country and people are unaware of the living conditions of some people who work so hard yet don't get paid enough for their efforts. The presenter in this documentary is shown as a normal guy who goes to different counties to find out things which may not be known and visible to normal people for example not many people are aware that there are people living like slaves in Dubai which is a wealthy country. The first time we see the BBC reporter is at 0.10 seconds. This is the start of the documentary where we see him with the VBS.TV and they are talking about what the reporter had to do. This section also shows what shots of what the reporter has done previously ar 0.18 seconds. The reporter does not look directly into the camera frequently. The reason for this may be because he is having a converstaion with the the VBS.TV person which means looking directly at the camera was not necessary. However at 2.49 seconds he looks directly at the camera to allow the audience to know what he will be doing as this creates a bond with the audience and allows them to feel involved.
This documentary had a range of different camera styles and editing techniques. It had a variety of shots, for example at 1.56 seconds its a shot of the surrounding and where the reporter was in Dubai. At 2.00 seconds we see a high angle shot of the paper in the reporters hand. These different shots allow the viewers to keep engaged and entertained as the documentary is interesting and the features of the documentary keep the audience entertained. The camera angles vary as most of the filming was done on the go which makes the pace of the filming fast. For example at 10.23 seconds the shot is moving and as audience it keeps us engaged as we feel part of it. These types of shots allow the audience to feel part of it and makes it more interesting as they feel they are involved.
This documentary is mainly the reporter speaking and we see different shots with voice-overs at times. For example at 9.06 seconds the reporter is talking about the situation of the workers. Having the shots of the workers while talking about them keeps the viewers entertained and engaged as they are able to see the working and living conditions of the workers. The intro started with facts of Dubai which was said through voice-overs at 0.34 seconds. This shot was of different famous buildings in Dubai and the reporter was talking about how most people are not even aware of who builds the buildings, and how they are living their life. The outro at 14.35 ends with arabian music and the shots of the famous buildings of Dubai. This shot will allow the viewers to know more about Dubai and will also get the viewers to think about the workers who work hard to make the building but earn less compared to how they work.
Mostly throughout this documentary the reporter is speaking to the VSB.TV guy saying what he saw and learnt. However at the beginning where we see the title of the documentary it has background arabian music which makes it more entertaining for the viewers. This is at 1.00 seconds at this point we also see different famous buildings and sceneries of Dubai. Other places throughout the documentary have background sound to set the mood and emotions of the documentary. Another place where background sound is used is at 9.10 seconds at this specific time they are talking about the workers which is why the music is much more sad and quiet type arabian music. The reason why they keep to the arabian music is because of the atmosphere and mood they are trying to create. Having the music linking with the topic keeps the viewers engaged and entertained.
This documentary is mainly objective as the reporter has gone to find out about the workers. The things we find out as viewers is what the reporter has mentioned. For example at 11.30 seconds the reporter is telling us about the surroundings which the workers are living in. The reporter is telling us by seeing the area and he also mentions how he feels which makes it subjective as he gives his opinion on the living status of the workers.
Overall I feel this documentary has been very effective and interesting. Personally I enjoyed it as I was unaware of this fact and it also made me realise that people are living in horrible conditions and we are unaware of this fact. This documentary keeps the viewers entertained through the music, the filming such as the secret filming at 2.08 seconds.
